Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi Recognized as a CMS Migratory Species Champion Plus & Extends its Unique Decade – Long Partnership with Convention on Migratory Species

Environment Agency — Abu Dhabi (EAD) and the Secretariat of the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) have extended their decade -long partnership, protecting Dugongs, African-Eurasian birds of prey and other migratory animals of regional importance. Established in the United Arab Emirates’ capital in 2009, CMS Office — Abu Dhabi is the only regional hub for the Convention outside its headquarters in Bonn, Germany. With the extension of the partnership agreement, CMS Office — Abu Dhabi will continue its UAE operations for another four years.

The Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are celebrating a decade of conservation achievements in the country and abroad. Established on 12 October 2009, CMS Office - Abu Dhabi, is hosted by Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD), and serves as the only regional hub for the Convention outside its headquarters in Bonn, Germany.

Saving Sea Cows Helps Ensure Human Food Security

Abu Dhabi, 16 March 2017 – Twenty-three countries agreed to enhance efforts to help local communities to better protect dugongs, also known as sea cows, and their seagrass habitats. The endangered species, which is primarily threatened by entanglement in fishing gear, collision with boats and habitat loss, occurs across the East coast of Africa, South-East Asia, Pacific Islands and Australia. Government officials, and the world’s leading dugong and seagrass experts, met this week in Abu Dhabi to discuss solutions to stop the rapid decline of dugongs and the seagrass meadows where they live.

Nations Meet to Save Dugongs and their Seagrass Habitats

Abu Dhabi, 13 March 2017 – Delegates from twenty-three countries, along with the world’s leading dugong and seagrass experts, gather today under the auspices of the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) for the opening of the Third Meeting of Signatories (MOS3) to Memorandum of Understanding on the Conservation and Management of Dugongs and their Habitats (Dugong MOU).

United Arab Emirates Joins Convention on Migratory Species - Reaffirms Strong Commitment to International Raptor and Dugong Conservation

The Convention on Migratory Species (CMS), the United Arab Emirates Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) and Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD) committed themselves to advancing their cooperation to conserve migratory species of wild animals, by the UAE’s recent accession to CMS as its 123rd member state, and the extension of the long-standing financial and in-kind support of CMS Office - Abu Dhabi by EAD on behalf of the Government of the UAE.

United Nations and Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi Enhance International Cooperation for Migratory Species of Wild Animals

The Convention on Migratory Species, administered by the United Nations Environment Programme, and Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi have agreed to extend their arrangement by which an office for the Convention was established in Abu Dhabi in 2009.
